As a researcher on mental health, vitality and well-being, I keep seeing a clear common thread when it comes to stress and methods to combat it. At whatever level I research, from current Western medical and psychological science, to the more spiritual and alternative side. I see a clear that in weze they are all saying the same thing.
CALM YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM.
How then? Simply put, our nervous system has two modes. Your sympatheticus and your parasympatheticus.
Your sympathetic causes a fight flight or freeze response and your parasympathetic causes rest relaxation and pleasure. In everyone with stress symptoms, I see that the problem is the sympathetic that is on too long, too often, too actively. This can cause numerous problems. From simple agitation to chronic illnesses. Thus, the first and most important step in stress is to calm your nervous system. And that is more important now than ever in a world with an abundance of overstimulation. We are always ON. Or rather our sympathetic is always on.
THIS COSTS TONS OF ENERGY.
The good news is, you can turn these off. And, pass creates space to think clearly, and usually you feel better and make better choices, too. Choices that can make a positive impact on others. For example, your team members.
So how do you calm your nervous system? By doing something relaxing. And that can be done in 100 different ways, and I’m sure you have a favorite method. For example, walking, meditating, dancing, making music…. Not only at home but also at work. My first step to reduce my feeling of work stress in no time is to slow down my breathing. 4 sec in 6 sec fixed 8 sec out. I notice it immediately.
I’m curious to see what works for you.
